Dana Point is home base for Pets Friend Forever, so I know what it takes to raise a well-behaved dog in this town better than anyone. Living with a dog here means beaches, bluff-top trails, and a harbor that’s often packed with people, other dogs, and distractions of every kind. It’s one of the most rewarding places in Orange County to own a dog, and also one that asks the most of your dog’s manners. A dog that pulls, lunges, or ignores you turns a walk around the harbor into a stressful ordeal instead of the highlight of your day.
I’m Bruce Afkami, founder of Pets Friend Forever, and helping Dana Point families raise calm, reliable dogs is what I do. I use positive reinforcement, a reward-based approach that produces a dog who wants to listen rather than one who only obeys out of fear. My own West Highland Terrier, Joey, was a stubborn handful when he was young and is now my training assistant, which is proof that even the most strong-willed dog can become a genuine pleasure to own.
The things that make Dana Point special are exactly the things that test a dog. A calm walk on the Bluff Top Trail is a completely different experience from weaving through the foot traffic at Dana Point Harbor, and the off-leash energy of the dog run at Sea Canyon Park is different again. Add the Salt Creek Trail heading down toward the beach, and it’s clear that a dog needs more than a few commands learned in the living room. It needs skills that hold up in the real, busy places you actually go.
That’s the foundation of how I work. Rather than drilling generic commands in isolation, I build your dog’s training around your neighborhood and your routine, so the good behavior shows up where you need it: on the bluff trail, at the harbor, at the dog park, at your front door, and in the car. Every dog is different too. Breed, age, energy, and any medical conditions all shape what a dog can handle, which is why a one-size-fits-all program so often falls flat. Everything starts with a free meet-and-greet and evaluation, where I meet you and your dog, watch how your dog responds, and only then recommend a plan that actually fits.
Training is the heart of what I do, built around four programs that build on one another. Most Dana Point clients start with the one that matches their dog’s age and their biggest current challenge.
The Puppy Passport is where new puppy owners begin. It covers the foundation every young dog and household needs: potty training, crate training, leash manners, reliable recall, and three to five basic commands. Getting these right early is the best way to prevent bigger behavior problems down the road, and it sets a calm, trusting tone from day one.
Dog Training Basics is a comprehensive obedience program with an introduction to socialization, offered as a 5-session or 10-session package. This is the right starting point for most adult dogs who never had proper training or who picked up some bad habits along the way. By the end, your dog knows the core commands and responds to them consistently, even with distractions around.
Premium All-Around Training includes everything in the basics and goes further, adding deeper socialization, street safety, pool and beach safety, and some light agility. In a coastal town like Dana Point, where your dog is constantly around water, crowds, and other dogs, this is an especially good fit for families who want a dog that’s genuinely dependable out in the community.
The Advanced Canine Good Citizen program takes your dog all the way to official AKC certification. It builds on every prior skill and finishes with mastery of the ten skills the American Kennel Club requires. As a certified CGC evaluator, I can both prepare your dog and conduct the evaluation, so you finish with a nationally recognized credential that proves your dog is a model canine citizen.
Every program runs on positive reinforcement. I’m experienced in the full range of training methods and respect each client’s preferences, but rewarding the behavior you want, so your dog chooses it willingly, is at the center of everything I do.
A huge share of the behavior problems I’m called about aren’t really training problems. They’re energy problems. A dog that doesn’t get enough physical exercise and mental stimulation will find its own outlet, and it’s usually one you won’t enjoy: chewing, digging, barking, or tearing around the house the moment you get home.
There’s honestly no better place to walk a dog than Dana Point, and my dog walking and exercise service makes the most of it, especially for owners who are busy or away during the day. Every walk is customized to your dog’s age, pace, and physical condition, so a young, athletic dog gets a real workout while a senior or a dog with a medical issue gets something gentler and appropriate. That might be an easy harbor-and-island loop, a stroll through Sea Canyon Park, or a longer adventure along the Salt Creek Trail toward the coast.
These outings do double duty. I encourage and monitor good leash manners throughout, so every walk reinforces your dog’s training. I also mix in nature field trips and fun adventures to keep your dog mentally engaged, not just physically tired. You get text, photo, and video updates during the visit and a short report at the end, so you always know how your dog did. Walks come in 30- or 60-minute options, additional dogs join at a discount, and there are further discounts on group and pre-pay arrangements. Scheduling, notifications, and progress updates are all handled conveniently online.
When a specific behavior is making life difficult, general obedience isn’t always enough on its own, and that’s where my behavior correction work comes in. In a busy coastal town, leash reactivity around the harbor crowds and other dogs is one of the issues I hear about most, along with barking, jumping on guests, counter surfing, and separation anxiety.
My approach is always case-specific. I take the time to understand what’s actually driving the behavior, because a dog reacting out of fear needs a very different plan than one reacting out of overexcitement. Then I use positive, reward-based methods to teach your dog what to do instead, which creates lasting change rather than a dog that’s simply suppressed for a while. Just as important, I coach you, because the consistency you provide between our sessions is what makes the results hold. I’ll give you the tools and the confidence to keep the progress going.
Dana Point is my home turf, and Pets Friend Forever is locally owned and operated right here. When you hire me, you get me, not a rotating roster of employees. I train one-on-one, so your dog gets focused attention instead of being one of twenty in a group class, and every plan is truly customized to your dog and your neighborhood. My Westie, Joey, often comes along as a training assistant and demo dog, which is a real advantage for dogs who need a calm, well-behaved example to socialize with. Above all, I care about the relationship between you and your dog, and my whole goal is to help the two of you understand each other and share a happier life together.

Yes, once your dog is ready for it. Real-world training in Dana Point’s parks, trails, and along the harbor is a big part of what I do, because that’s where your dog needs to behave. We build up to it as your dog’s skills become reliable.
Absolutely. I come to you, and dogs learn best where the behaviors actually happen, so training in and around your own home and neighborhood makes the results far more dependable than lessons learned somewhere unfamiliar.
It depends on the program and your dog’s needs, which is exactly why I start with a free meet-and-greet. Once I’ve met your dog and understood your goals, I can recommend the right program and give you clear pricing.
